Marriage Made in Heaven: Protrada Adds Appraiso to Their Website Development Platform

A couple of months ago I told you about a new website appraisal tool that had just been released at Appraiso.com. Now Protrada.com has decided to pair Appraiso with their innovative website development platform, giving clients a new way to determine the value of the websites they are building.

Google Chrome handles new TLDs badly

Sint Maarten’s new .sx country-code top-level names has been online for at least a couple months now, but Google’s Chrome browser appears to be still a bit wary of it.

Typing “registry.sx” and “nic.sx” into Chrome’s combined URL/search bar today, instead of being sent to my chosen destination I was instead sent to a page of Google search results.

The browser presented the message “Did you mean to go to http://registry.sx?”.

Chrome .sx

Once my intentions were confirmed, Chrome bounced me to the registry’s web site and seemed to remember my preference on future visits. Other Chrome users have reported the same behavior.

Chrome is understood to use the Public Suffix portfolio to figure out what is and isn’t a names, and .sx does not currently appear on that collection.

Internet Explorer and Firefox (also a Public Suffix portfolio user) both seem already to resolve .sx domain names normally.

While not a massive problem for .sx, which has just a handful of second-level domain name active, new gTLD applicants might want to pay attention to this kind of thing.

Chrome has a significant share of the browser market – about 15% by some counts, as high as 38% by others.

Launching a new gTLD without full browser support could look messy. Chrome isn’t blocking access to .sx, but its handling of the new TLD is not particularly graceful.

Imagine a scenario in which you’ve just launched your dot-brand, and instead of arriving at your web site Chrome users are instead directed to Google (with the top sponsored result a link you’ve probably paid for).

ICANN is currently pondering ways to promote the universal acceptance of TLDs for precisely this reason.

Searches for the pop producer Will.I.Am prompt Chrome to attempt to find an address in the Armenian ccTLD.

UDRP: Domain names Names Meet Real World

“The UDRP is well out of control now, where those wanting to acquire a name name that is unavailable due to use or price, are now taking a risk free shot at grabbing the name name from its lawful owner. We need UDRP reform & we need it now” But from the filer’s perspective we need these gold diggers out of our way because they stand in the way of legitimate business, and only in

Appraiso Integrated Into Protrada

One of the benefits of using Protrada is the ability to create websites. Although I have not created a website with Protrada, there are many people who have.

In a press release this morning, Protrada announced that  Morgan Linton’s Appraiso has been integrated into its platform. Appraiso is a website created by Linton and his fiancé Daina Burnes to help people appraise their revenue generating websites. With Protrada’s website building offering, it’s obviously a good fit, as it will allow people to track the progression of their websites’ worth.

This isn’t the first time that Morgan has worked with Protrada’s Troy Rushton. In April, when Troy spoke at the National Achievers Conference in San Jose, Morgan was instrumental in creating the presentation.

Press release is below:

In early 2012 an innovative startup in Los Angeles released Appraiso, the first tool to put serious mathematical modeling behind website appraisals. The founders saw a gap in the market and spent a year crunching numbers and building a tool to accurately estimate the price of a developed website. “We saw the opportunity to innovate in one of the fastest growing spaces on the Internet and we went for it,” says Morgan Linton, one of Appraiso’s three founders. Before marketplaces like Flippa, website sales happened underground, scattered across hundreds of forums across the net. With over 31 million dollars in website sales in 2011 alone, Flippa has shown that the market for developed websites is growing, and fast.

Last year another innovative company, Protrada, created an all-in-one platform for buying, selling, and developing domain name names. In early 2012 they refined their platform creating a website builder tool that took the platform to the next level making it easy for anyone to build content-rich interactive websites. The tool was an instant success with hundreds of thousands of domain names running through Protrada and thousands more coming onboard each day. “We created a platform that allows anyone to build one, two, or ten websites all with a few clicks. Partnering with content providers and allowing for the addition of interactive features without writing a single line of code has greatly contributed to the initial success we have seen,” says Troy Rushton, Protrada’s CEO.

Today Appraiso and Protrada have announced a new partnership making the Appraiso Website Appraisal system available directly from the Protrada platform. “It was an obvious fit for us, thousands of people are building websites with Protrada, now they can find out how much those sites are worth,” say Linton. “This gives Protrada users a way to better understand how the digital real estate they are developing can grow in value over time.”

Protrada users can immediately begin using Appraiso from within the platform to evaluate their current sites as well as track website value on a regular basis. Then, when they are ready to sell, Protrada can seamlessly allow users to list these sites on some of the top names and website marketplaces on the planet. “Having a valuation benchmark will reduce uncertainty and stimulate transactions, Appraiso is well positioned to become the standard. We are already seeing an increase in web development services as investors seek to unlock the value of their digital assets,” say Rushton about the early results of the integration.

In a world where digital real estate is growing faster than physical real estate both Appraiso and Protrada are positioning themselves to play a critical role in the development and sales of digital assets. “Let’s face it, physical real estate used to be one of the best investments you could make, but those days are over. With the incredible growth of smartphones and rapid adoption of Internet users across the globe, digital real estate is a large and growing market, and we’re looking forward to playing a valuable role in this next phase.” says Linton, “The best part is we are still seeing only the tip of the iceberg, and unlike physical real estate, with digital assets the sky really is the limit!”

Brands are Pool.com’s surprise digital archery clients

Companies applying to ICANN for “dot-brand” top-level domains are among those signing up for Pool.com’s new digital archery service, according to CEO Rob Hall.

The company launched its Digital Archery Engine last month, not too long after ICANN confirmed its controversial method of batching new gTLD applications for processing.

Now, Pool is receiving interest from not only mass-market generic string applicants, but also dot-brands.

“It’s a wider swath of TLDs that I thought originally,” said Hall. “At first I thought for sure the generics and the name that might be in competition.”

“It’s amazing to me that a lot of people out there are saying the brands don’t care, the brands are doing this just defensively, the brands couldn’t care less about going first… but a lot of them do,” he said.

“A lot of them are saying ‘I want to be in that first batch’, which I wouldn’t have necessarily expected,” he added.

He said he had no idea what the motivations are for these brands.

“Our job is to get them in the first batch, not to ask them why they want to be there,” he said.

Hall said it wasn’t clear how many clients Pool would eventually sign up to the service, but said he expects it to be definitely much more than 50.

ICANN’s digital archery system – which will batch applicants according to which can most accurately send a message over the internet to a target time – was poorly received by most people.

Unsurprisingly, Hall is not one of those people.

Pool is one of several companies that have been competing to register expiring domainname names for the better part of a decade, so its systems have been fine-tuned for sending messages over the internet quickly.

While the big registries such as .com use the EPP protocol, some of the registries Pool interacts with use HTTP, which seems to be ICANN’s preferred option for digital archery.

Hall said Pool aims for latency of less than 6 milliseconds. Its servers are positioned topologically close to registries – typically one or two hops – and the software measures monitors network conditions.

“The key is being able to detect what is the latency and to predict it, then factor that into the engine to say ‘When do I fire?’,” he said.

He does not anticipate the CAPTCHAs or other Turing tests presenting a problem – Pool would simply bring a human into the equation.

The Digital Archery Engine is not cheap. If Pool gets you into the first batch, you’re $25,000 out of pocket. If you’re in the top half of batches (batch three of five counts as top half) it’s $10,000.

The company was singled out recently by ICANN’s Intellectual Property Constituency as an “insider” exploiting the digital archery system as a “revenue extraction opportunity”.

A letter highly critical of the system from IPC chair Steve Metallitz said:

This arcane and seemingly arbitrary batching method will also reinforce the widespread impression that all ICANN procedures are dominated by “insiders” with contractual relationships to ICANN, who will surely know best how to manipulate this initiative to their own benefit, or that of their paying customers. It is difficult to reconcile such an outcome with ICANN’s obligation to act in the public interest.

Hall said was happy for the free advertising. “I’d like to thank them,” he said.

But he said Pool isn’t “manipulating” anything.

“They’ve called this ‘digital archery’,” he said. “It’s a game to see who’s best at it. That’s what they’ve designed. We’re not gaming anything. And we’re not offering this to insiders, we’re offering this to everyone.”

WordPress Wednesday: Three Great Creative Business Themes

Hello and welcome to a little weekly segment I’ve decided to call WordPress Wednesday’s. People always ask me what WordPress themes I like so as per usual I like to turn these into a post rather than just share this information with one person. For my first WordPress Wednesday I thought it would be fun to share three of my favorite Business Themes.

WordPress can be an excellent way to build a professional looking site for your business that is easy to update, and best of all, looks good. Let’s face it, too many businesses have old, junky-looking websites, many don’t realize that something like WordPress could completely revamp their site without a lot of work. Of course using a business theme doesn’t mean you have to be boring, I’ve picked out three of my favorite creative business themes that can really make your corporate site look a little less corporate and a bit more fun. The themes below are all top-notch in my opinion and for under $100 they cost a heck of a lot less than hiring a web developer to revamp your site.

Empire – WooThemes

Empire Theme

Empire is a slick yet simple business theme. It literally takes under an hour to completely configure and the front slider looks great if you have a nice high-res image (think $10 or less on iStockPhoto). I really like that they have the “Get In Touch” section on the front of the page. Great spot in the upper right-hand corner to give a personalized touch by introducing visitors to your team. Like all WooThemes you don’t have to write a single line of code and the customized dashboard module is incredibly easy to configure.

Envisioned – Elegant Themes

Envisioned ThemeWhile this theme may be a bit too artsy for some companies I think it looks incredibly clean. There’s something about the simplicity of this theme that’s always really spoken to me. It is intended as a theme for a personal blog but I think it would make an amazing theme for any business that builds websites, takes photos, videos, etc. Let’s face it, some of the standard business themes don’t quite fit for the more creative companies out there, this one does and it looks great with a simple text logo.

Momento – ThemeForest

Momento Theme

This is another very visual business theme and a great one for any company looking for a more Web 2.0 look. The three text boxes underneath the photo are great for focusing the visitor on the three key items you want your customers to focus on. The navigation at the top doesn’t steal the show allowing your visitor to focus on what’s important. Theme Forest themes are great but not a good choice for beginners so if you’re just starting out I’d stick with one of the others I’ve mentioned above.

Note: I do have affiliate links in this post for these themes. If you feel like cutting me out of the equation simply visit the site directly.
